Hilti Cordless Drills Review - Don't Spend a Dime Before Reading This

How are the Hilti Cordless Drills when stacked up against the competition? Here is a short but revealing review to help you find out:

Models

They offer the 9.6, the 12, the 14.4, and the 18v models. Here is a short review of each to help you choose the right one-if any:

18v

This is BY FAR their most popular model... while it's not as well known as many others that means it cheaper.

It sells for 0-cheaper than a Makita or other top of the line models. This one is known for its' power to size ratio-which is among the best in its' class.

Also its' ease of use and good balance give it high marks as well. the one main negative is that often the batteries are usually sold separately at most locations, which is a minor inconvenience.

15v

This one is their next size down, but still adequate to handle most jobs. The one negative with this Hilti Cordless Drill is that changing the battery is a bit hard... as the tabs are too tiny to be used from underneath.

You have to come at it from the back if you want to get the batteries out. A SMALL inconvenience, but still below the standards of the upscale models.

But on the whole the power of this one and performance are very good.

12v

This is their "homeowners" version. But don't be fooled-it still goes up to 1300rpms which is pretty respectable when compared with other 12vs.

This certainly isn't going to be used at major construction sites so the power is adequate for any home project. It's good for drilling into wood and metal.

9.6v

This is the smallest they offer, and is only good for the really small time projects. But this one is still capable of achieving 1250 RPMs, which is almost as high as the 12v, and the power is better than you'd expect for the smaller engine size. Still, your best bet is to go with the 12v in most instances.

The VERDICT

Hilti cordless drills are solid machines-they aren't as good as Makita or Milwaukee, but for most people they are adequate.

Any Cordless Drills Made In the USA and Are They Better?

German and Japanese drills have perceptibly led the market quite well with their range and good quality drills. But when it comes down to American made drills, then Milwaukee makes a really good stand against these top competing companies that make drills. Milwaukee is reliable to promise you a good quality cordless drill, but when you search for other American brands then it starts to become harder to find. It is natural that customers would want to use a cordless drill that serves their purpose easily and is not too costly. Another company that even has some workshops in the United States is DeWalt. However, no matter how thoroughly you search for various cordless drill reviews, you will be led to the fact that the Japanese brands like Makita or Panasonic have clear lead in the industry. There are some big factors that every customer looks for when choosing drills for their household maintenance:

Batteries

The only weakness of a cordless drill is that they run on batteries which eventually have to be replaced by one that is charged. A good life of the battery along with a good type of battery like Lithium Ion is what people love to see. For usual easy and heavy household needs, you would be better off with an 18v cordless drill. You can go for lower power variety too because most often you will be using them to fasten screws than drilling holes. Plus if you have one that is of 9v or 14v, it will be lighter and have longer battery life. A good high end choice for this can be from a range of Makita cordless drills or the higher end Panasonic drills for professionals to get the best power out of your budget.

Value for money

Some brands have made their way as excellent value for money variety of drills and one of these is the Makita BDF452HW model. This has excellent power with a balance of reasonable battery life to do the most difficult jobs at home. Their design is intuitive and balanced from both ends so that you can aim it better. Other qualities include:

1. Lithium Ion battery
2. Good handles with rubber grip
3. 16 levels of positioning the chuck
4. Durable with casing
5. LED work light

For a slightly lower end but good value for money choice is the Makita BDF452 for household need. American brands have not made much advantage out of this factor, however there are some DeWalt models that are still good value for money but heavier to handle. Under these popular factors the drills that are made my American companies or assembled in America still do not come as the best choices but there are some which are still much better than the average drills that you will find.

You will need to do some research checking out cordless drill reviews online to be sure which model you need because not all Makita are the best and some Dewalt or Milwaukee cordless drills are better in some purposes. But if you need to make a safe decision without worrying about making a bad choice for cordless drills then you can straight off head for the best seller models like the Makita BDF452HW.

Battery Desulfator Schematics: A Helpful Tool for Battery Reconditioning

Sulfur crystals start to form and cover the plates of lead when the voltage of a lead acid battery declines to a charge below 12.3 volts. The buildup of sulfur crystals inside the battery then results to the internal battery being irresponsive, in effect, making it useless.

An effective way to remedy this is to use a battery desulfator. What it does is to send pulses of high-voltage in order to disintegrate the accrued sulfur crystals inside. A battery desulfates according to its size. For example, a sixty pound battery for your car takes 3 weeks to completely desulfate.

A lot of people have a hard time understanding the process of desulfating a battery. However, if you only gather enough information and read on the following carefully, you might have a better grasp and appreciation at what a battery desulfator schematic is.

1. To get you started, test your battery first to examine whether it may be considered for reconditioning. It is important to remember that only selected batteries can qualify for a recharge. There are actually some that are rendered useless.

2. With a multi-tester in hand, determine the remaining voltage of the battery. A battery can qualify for reconditioning when it has a low charge. Also, individual cells may be applied with several procedures, still through a multi-tester, to measure the voltage left. Note that these cells should be tested according to their own charges.

3. In any case where the battery does not show a charge, examine its water level. Refill the battery with ionized water if water level is low. With a trickle charger, charge the battery for 24 hours. The following day, check on the battery for a charge.

4. Reconditioning is only possible for a battery that shows a charge. If by any chance your battery shows a charge, as an initial procedure, start the process of recharging with the battery desulfator schematic.

5. Link the battery and the desulfator together. Make sure that the positive lead with the positive pole and the negative lead connects with the negative pole.

6. The desulfator is often inclined to lessen the energy of the battery thus resulting to a reduced voltage of the battery. A twelve-volt charger can do just the trick to remedy this tendency.

7. Keep track of the daily improvement of the reconditioning process by way of a low tester.

8. As said earlier, completing the process of recharging depends on the size of the battery. Some will take days and some, weeks. To further examine the development of the process, it is recommended that you check on the specific gravity and level of voltage of the battery as well. Subsequently, apply equalization charge.

9. It is expected that voltage charges are to increase. Upon reaching a 14 volt charge, your battery is considered reconditioned.

Keep in mind to follow thoroughly the instructions given to get desired results and to maintain safety. Reconditioning batteries is actually easy and in fact, practical. It helps you save a lot of money and contributes to the environment as well. With battery desulfator schematic, you can recondition your batteries with no sweat!

Battery Desulfator Schematic: Important Steps To Successfully Recondition Your Battery

When a standard 12-volt lead-acid battery goes into a discharge, lead sulphate is usually formed and the sulphuric component of this compound usually crystallizes on the battery's lead plates. Over time, the crystallized sulphur accumulates until it renders the battery unusable. This is when we say that a battery has gone dead.

Fortunately, there is a way to break up these sulphur crystals and bring it back to life. Using a desulfator, a battery is subjected to high-voltage electrical pulses, which effectively break up the crystals. A 60-pound car battery can be fully desulfated within three weeks; bigger batteries or battery banks may take longer to attain full desulfation.

If you wish to try desulfating an old car battery, you'll need to understand the battery desulfator schematic in order to get the best results. Following is an example of a good schematic that you can use as guide. Be sure to read and understand this battery desulfator schematic before starting on your own desulfation project.

• The first step is to run a test to ensure that it can be reconditioned. Batteries that have cracks or broken parts may no longer be reconditioned.
• Next, you have to measure it's available voltage with a multi-tester. It is best to test the individual battery cells and get their respective charges. If the tester registers even the smallest charge, then the battery is good enough for reconditioning.
• If the test does not register any charge, you'll have to check the battery's water level. If you check that the water level is low, then you'll have to fill the cells with ionized waterand then charge the battery overnight and then check for a charge again the next day.
• If it registers a charge the following day, then the reconditioning process can begin.
• To connect the desulfator on to the battery, clamp each lead to its corresponding pole (negative lead to negative pole; positive lead to positive pole).
• Take note that a desulfator normally gets power from the battery. It is therefore advisable to restore the battery's voltage first using a 12-volt battery charger.
• Check the progress of the desulfation daily and recharging process with a low tester.
• Be sure to check the battery's specific gravity along with its voltage. After checking these details, you should apply an equalization charge.
• As you monitor the process, you will notice an increase in the battery's voltage. When the charge reaches 14 volts after applying an equalization charge, then the process can be considered complete and your battery is as good as new.
• To ensure that you get the best results, be sure to follow this battery desulfator schematic carefully.

Contrary to what you may think, battery reconditioning is very easy. What's best is that it allows you to save a lot of money and may even become a good source of additional income.

Ruger SR9 pistol: Gunning for the Glock, Part 1
UPDATE 9/2010: One sample failed reliability tests in my new "Trench Warfare" Handgun Drill. Repeated failures to go into battery. Gun was fresh from box, no cleaning and no lubrication however after cleaning it still continued. Gun was sent to Ruger for repair. PART 1 of 3: I dig the Ruger SR9 pistol. Its another high-value 9mm handgun that seems to give up nothing for its affordable price. My shooting of the SR9 in my Tactical Clinic showed it be a reliable, accurate (even at 100yds!), fast shooting, FUN, and comfortable pistol. When compared against the Nutnfancy standard of 9mm pisitols, the Glock 17, the SR9 does win in the value category but admittedly does come is second in several other categories. But the margins of victory for the Glock 17 against the SR9 are small indeed and with most users, these differences could be negligible. Other uppsides for the SR9 include lightweight carry (27 oz), interchangeable backstrap, well-placed controls, crisp trigger, great sights, sturdiness, good simplicity, high firepower (17 rds!), a chamber indicator (forgot to mention that), and a variety of available finishes. It might be awhile until the accessories market, such as holsters and night sight options, catch up to this Ruger pistol (2008). But the SR9 is selling extremely well and I predict the market will catch up and your accessorizing options will increase. And yes, its too early to tell what kind of track record the Ruger SR9 will establish but I suspect that will be ...

In this article I am going to give you my quick review of all the NEXTEC tools available now. Craftsman just announced that they are greatly expanding the Craftsman NEXTEC 12 volt Cordless power tools in May 2011 so this is a good time to go over the entire line. The Craftsman NEXTEC QuickBoost Charger will hit shelves in May 2011 and will be followed shortly by a NEXTEC 12-volt 3-in-1 garden tool, string trimmer, hedge trimmer, vacuum, digital inflater, work light and second generation "Hammerhead" Auto Hammer.

I like tools. I like "Tim the Toolman Taylor" Tools. Bigger is better! More Power! Oo-OoO! So when Craftsman sent me the NEXTEC Cordless 12 volt Power Tools last spring I used them, wrote a couple of articles on these cute little tools and then promptly put them down in my basement workshop. They were nice, lightweight tools. They had plenty of power, but I still went back to my "big" tools. I basically forgot about them.

Craftsman NEXTEC Cordless Tools: Real Power Tools or Just Toys?

Then, I went into my local Sears around Thanksgiving and I saw customers literally buying the NEXTEC Lithium-Ion Drill/Driver as fast as the store personnel could put them out. What was really strange to me is these NEXTEC 12 volt drills were flying off the shelves, but no one was buying the DeWalt DCD710 12V MAX lithium drill from the display right along side the NEXTEC's. I knew is was a nice little drill, but I didn't think everyone else liked it that much. The same thing was happening with the Craftsman NEXTEC 12.0 Volt Right Angle Impact Driver was selling well but no one was buying the Dewalt DCF815 12V MAX 1/4 impact driver right next to it.

Craftsman NEXTEC Cordless Tools: Real Power Tools or Just Toys?

No URL

During the winter I move into a room in the basement. It's small, only 10 X 10 ft so I don't have room for a lot of stuff. My router, a workbench with a wood vise, a few hand tools and a set-up table. There is no room for my table saw, miter saw, jointer and drill press. I end up cutting my wood out in the unheated garage, bringing it downstairs, fitting it up, going back out in the garage to drill the holes or joint an edge, back down stairs......you get the picture.

Well, while I was getting the room ready for the winter I found the NEXTEC tools and decided to take a good hard look at them again.

I decided that I would use these tools exclusively in my downstairs workshop this winter.

What I like:

Weight. The NEXTEC tools weigh only half of even my lightest cordless drill.

Size. Easy to handle even for small hands. Don't feel too small like the little cordless screwdrivers for big hands

Power. Have as much power as the old 15.6 tools and I think a lot more power than the old 7.2, 9.6, 10.8 and 14.4 tools. More power than the C3 19.2 volt Model 17191

In the rest of this article I will give quick review of each tool:

Craftsman NEXTEC 12.0V Lithium-Ion Drill/Driver Model 17586 What I like: It costs less than half of DeWalt DCD710 12V MAX Drill. It weighs less at only 2.2 lbs. with the 12.0 Volt Lithium-Ion battery. It will fit in your hand and easily slip into the pocket of your work apron. This is the most powerful drill on the market for the weight. It has 195 in.-lbs. of Torque which is plenty for most of the tasks around your home. It has a 2-Speed Gearbox and a 3/8-Inch Single Sleeve Keyless Chuck. A lot of guys thin they need a 1/2 inch chuck, but if you look at the wall at your nearest hardware store 95% of the drill bits and screwdriving bits will fit in this drill. 18 Position Adjustable Torque Clutch. Integrated LED Work Light. 30-Minute Quick Charger What I don't like: I really like this drill and about the only thing I would put on it would be a battery charge indicator. It would be nice to know when the battery is about to run out.

Craftsman NEXTEC 12.0 Volt Right Angle Impact Driver Model 17562 What I like: Even though Sears states this has only 700 in lbs of torque a bunch of us feel it has as much power as the Dewalt DCF815 12V MAX 1/4 impact driver for a lot less money. We also liked the right angle drive. It will get into places the other drills can't. What I don't like: The right angle takes a little practice to get used to. When you first use it...use both hands until you get the feel for the impact driver. After that you will enjoy using it.

Craftsman 17428 Nextec 12-volt Cordless Compact 1/4'' Impact Driver Model 17428 What I like: Same weight and feel as the Model 17586 Drill/Driver. What I don't like: Could use a battery meter.

12-volt NEXTEC Multi-Tool Model 17438 What I like: Multi-tools are quickly becoming the go-to tool for cutting, sanding, grout removal and scraping. This lightweight tool can easily do the work of a trim saw, jamb saw, drywall saw, detail sander, rotary grout tool, carbide cutter and paint scraper. The Craftsman NEXTEC is one of the lightest of the bunch and it will accept the Fein attachments. This gives it the most versatility of all the mulit-tools out there. It has plenty of power to do all these tasks around the home. The batteries last about 20 minutes during continuous use, charge in 30 minutes and you can get a second battery if you need one for less than . What I don't like: Eventually I would like to see quick release blade changing. It only takes 30 seconds to change the tool now, but I want to do it faster!

NEXTEC 12-volt Lithium-Ion Hammerhead Auto Hammer Model 11818 What I like: I don't use nails very often anymore. I use screws for most of my woodworking tasks, but the other day I put a few more lights in the basement and the Hammerhead was the right tools to nail the outlet boxes into the rafters. It only took 30 seconds to nail the box into the beam and NO BENT NAILS! What I don't like: Craftsman is coming out with a new version of this about May 2011. I will wait to give you my viewpoint then.

Craftsman NEXTEC 12.0V Lithium-Ion True Finish™ Sander Model 61326 What I like: This is a "Mouse" size sander but it has two big advantages over all the other sanders like it on the market. One, it is cordless! The battery lasts a long, long time. Two, It doesn't make your hand go numb! The built in counter balancer cancels out the hand numbing vibration you are used to. What I don't like: NO ONE knows about this sander! It comes in one kit and you can get the "bare" tool online but very few people realize how nice this sander is.

Craftsman NEXTEC 12.0V Lithium-Ion Circular Saw Model 61325 What I like: This is the one tool in the NEXTEC line that I really don't like. It has enough power to cut even hard maple, but the design is all wrong. The base plate "shoe" is too big for the saw, The saw mark on the shoe is too far away from the blade. It doesn't have a laser guide, the light is in the wrong place, the blades are too thick and there is not enough of a selection of blade styles. What I don't like: Oops, I already told you what I don't like.

Craftsman 14299 Nextec 12-volt Cordless Multi-Saw Model 14299 What I like: I use this saw a lot for the size, power, and versatility. It has a lot of power for the size and is really handy for those quick cuts. It uses standard jig saw blades which come in all sizes and styles. What I don't like: It doesn't have a "blower" to keep the sawdust away from your cut line.

Craftsman NEXTEC 12 volt LED Worklight Model 14298 What I like: This is a great work light and flashlight for the house. It will run continuously for hours on one battery and the battery stays charged for over a year if you don't use it. The head swivels for under the sink work and it stands up all by itself. What I don't like: My wife saw it, and immediately stole it to put on her nightstand! Now if it only came in decorator colors!

Craftsman 12 Volt Nextec Compact Lithium-Ion battery Model 11221 What I like: You can buy additional batteries for less than . A lot of power for the size. (as much as your old 14.4 batteries) Will hold a charge for up to a year. With the new charger Craftsman just announced will recharge to 25% in less than 3 minutes. What I don't like: I would like a little clip so I can hang a spare on my belt.

Summary: The Craftsman NEXTEC 12 volt Cordless power tools are great for homeowners. They are lightweight, strong and easy on the wallet to buy. They work surprisingly well for the size and cost a lot less than other brands. I highly recommend these tools.
